The SKETCH Framework

The Beginner's Guide to Urban Sketching

Everything you need to start sketching cities, architecture, and everyday life — with confidence, not perfection.

What Is Urban Sketching?

Urban sketching is the practice of drawing the world around you — on location, in real time. It's not about perfection. It's about presence. Urban sketchers capture cities, neighborhoods, cafés, train stations, markets, and rooftops with a pen or brush in hand, translating the energy and texture of a place directly onto paper. The result is a personal, imperfect, and deeply human record of the world as you experience it.

Unlike studio drawing, urban sketching happens in the wild. You sit on a curb, prop your sketchbook on your knee, and begin. The city moves around you, light shifts, strangers walk past — and you keep drawing. This is what makes it alive.

Why Architects and Designers Love It

As an architect, sketching is how I think. Before software, before blueprints, there is always a sketch — a quick mark on paper that captures the essence of an idea faster than any tool can render it. Urban sketching sharpens the same skills: proportion, perspective, shadow, and the ability to see structure where others see only surfaces.

Architects who sketch regularly develop an innate sense of spatial relationships. They understand how a building sits in its context, how light wraps a facade, how human scale relates to built form. These are not skills you can learn from a screen alone. They come from observation — sustained, patient, pen-in-hand observation.

The SKETCH Framework

The SKETCH Framework is my practical six-step approach to building creative confidence through drawing. It was born from years of teaching high school architecture students and from my own experience sketching cities around the world. Here's what each letter means:

  • S — SeeTrain your eye before you pick up your pen. Look at the whole scene. Identify the dominant shapes, the light source, the focal point.
  • K — Keep It SimpleDon't try to draw everything. Choose what matters. Edit ruthlessly. The best sketches contain only what's necessary.
  • E — Embrace ImperfectionCrooked lines are honest lines. A sketch that looks "wrong" often feels more right than a technically perfect drawing. Let go.
  • T — Trust the ProcessThe drawing evolves. What looks like a mess at minute five becomes a composition by minute fifteen. Trust it.
  • C — Commit to the MarkDraw with intention. Hesitant marks produce weak sketches. Commit to each line as if it's exactly right — because it is.
  • H — Habit Over InspirationDon't wait to feel inspired. Sketch daily. Even five minutes. Creativity is a practice, not a mood.

What Tools Do You Actually Need?

The honest answer: a pen and paper. That's it. You don't need expensive supplies to start urban sketching. A ballpoint pen and a cheap notebook will absolutely do. As you develop a practice, you'll naturally gravitate toward tools that match your style — but the tools should never become a barrier to starting.

My personal kit includes a fountain pen for expressive line work, a water brush for quick ink washes, and a compact watercolor set for color notes. I keep it all in a LOCHBY Tool Roll that fits in a shoulder bag. The entire kit weighs less than a paperback book.

The most important tool is the habit of showing up. Carry a sketchbook wherever you go. Draw your coffee cup. Draw the view from the window. Draw the fire escape across the street. The subject matter is everywhere — all that's missing is the practice.

How to Start Today

Pick up a pen. Open to any page. Look out your window or step outside. Draw one building, one tree, one doorway — for five minutes. Don't judge it. Don't erase it. Just finish it, date it, and start the next one tomorrow.

That's the entire secret to urban sketching. It starts with one honest mark on one page. Everything else follows from there.
